Original single-pane wood-frame windows, when properly restored and weatherized, can achieve thermal performance approaching that of modern double-pane windows. Studies by preservation organizations have documented that well-maintained historic windows with storm windows achieve comparable energy performance to replacement windows at a fraction of the cost. Beyond performance, original windows have irreplaceable character — the slight waviness, the hand-rolled thickness variations, the patina of aged glass — that no reproduction can perfectly replicate. The process depends on the condition of the window but typically includes some combination of the following: removing loose or crumbling glazing compound and replacing it with new traditional linseed oil putty (the period-appropriate material); replacing broken individual lights (panes) with matching glass — restoration glass for visible exterior surfaces, standard glass for secondary locations; consolidating deteriorated wood with epoxy consolidant and repairing damaged sections of the sash with epoxy filler or new wood; repainting with appropriate primer and oil-based finish paint; and replacing failed weatherstripping with historical profiles. For leaded glass windows, repair involves re-leading loose or broken sections and re-soldering joints. We work through the scope systematically on the estimate visit.
