Window Safety for Children: Prevention and Protection
1

Window Fall Prevention

Window falls are a leading cause of injury in young children. Windows above the first floor pose a fall risk when opened, especially if furniture is positioned nearby.

Install window guards or stops that limit how far windows can open. Guards should prevent openings larger than 4 inches while still allowing the window to be opened for ventilation.

Window stops are devices that lock into the track and prevent the window from opening more than 4 inches. They are effective, affordable, and easy to install.

Move furniture away from windows. Children climb on beds, chairs, and tables to reach windows. Rearranging furniture reduces the risk.

2

Safety Glass for Family Homes

Tempered glass is required by building codes in certain locations: doors, sidelights, windows near the floor, and bathroom glass. In family homes with young children, consider tempered glass in additional locations.

Security film applied to existing glass holds broken glass together if a window breaks. This prevents children from falling through and reduces injury from flying glass.

Laminated glass provides the highest level of child safety. Even when broken, it stays in the frame and cannot be penetrated, preventing both falls and glass injuries.

3

Window Lock and Cord Safety

Ensure all window locks are functional and engaged when windows are closed. Teach older children how to operate windows safely.

Cordless window treatments eliminate strangulation risk from blind cords. If you have corded blinds, install cord cleats to keep cords out of reach.

Consider keyless window locks for rooms where young children play. These locks can be operated by adults but not by small children.
