One light or two, and what that is worth

The jump from a single-glazed front to a double-glazed one is not a small upgrade. It is the difference between a room that looks private and a room that is.

Mass, then separation

A thicker laminated light adds mass and lifts the rating a little. Splitting it into two lights with a cavity between them lifts it far more, because the two leaves stop moving as one.

Absorb the reveal

The cavity between two lights behaves like a drum unless the reveals absorb. Lining the head and jamb returns is a small item on a schedule and a large one in the result.

Seals decide the outcome

A gap at the head, an unsealed base channel or a hollow door undercut will undo a high-rated panel. The weakest path sets the number you actually hear.

Flanking beats everything

Sound travelling over a ceiling grid, through a shared plenum or along a floor void ignores the partition completely. That is why the head goes to the structure.

What the front has to do — hold a conversation, take a door, cross a rated line, hide on demand — decides which of these you are actually specifying.

Frameless butt-jointed

Full-height laminated lights joined with clear structural silicone, head and base tracks only. The cleanest sightline available and the reason most people want a glass front in the first place.

Slim-frame aluminium

Structural profiles at head, base and jambs with narrow sightlines. Takes doors, returns and services without special detailing, which is why it ends up on most floor plates.

Double-glazed acoustic

Two independent lights with a cavity between them and absorptive reveals. This is the assembly to specify when the room has to hold a conversation, not just look private.

Switchable privacy glass

A liquid-crystal film laminated into the panel that turns from clear to opaque on demand. It changes what you can see; it does nothing at all to what you can hear.

Integral blinds

Blinds sealed permanently inside a double-glazed cavity, operated magnetically or by a motor. Nothing to dust, nothing to catch, nothing to replace.

Fire-rated screens

Tested glass and framing assemblies where a rated separation is required. The frame, glass, seals and fixings are certified as a system — components are not interchangeable.

Butt joints look like nothing

Two polished edges and a clear silicone bead. It is the detail people picture when they say “frameless”, and it needs flat floors, true head lines and panels cut to the survey — there is no frame to hide a discrepancy in.

Posts do the work

A post gives the seal something to land on, takes a door frame or a corner, and lets services and switching drop down the partition rather than round it. On acoustic fronts a post at the junction is usually the better answer, not the compromise.

Method

How a partition project runs

Survey the space

Slab-to-slab dimensions, ceiling type, floor flatness and levels, structural deflection, and where the services actually run. Almost every problem on a partition job is found here or not at all.

Detail and propose

Layout drawings, panel schedule, glass specification, acoustic assembly, door and hardware schedule, and the head, base and jamb details we intend to build.

03

Fabricate

Panels cut, edgeworked, toughened and laminated to the surveyed sizes, with tracks and hardware to match. Typically two to three weeks after the final measure.

04

Install and seal

Tracks set to line and level, panels glazed on blocks, joints siliconed, doors hung and adjusted, and every seal checked — the seals are what deliver the acoustic rating.

Is this the right move

Signs a floor is ready for glass fronts

  • 01Perimeter glazing lights the outside of the floor plate and the middle of it stays dark.
  • 02People complain about noise, but nobody wants to go back to enclosed rooms.
  • 03Meeting rooms exist, but conversations in them are audible in the open plan outside.
  • 04You need private rooms sooner than a stud-and-board programme can deliver them.

Working in occupied buildings

Most of the floors we fit out are still being worked in. Panels arrive cut to a survey rather than being made on site, installation is dry, and the noisy work is scheduled out of hours. Nothing gets sanded, taped or painted over a working desk.

Questions

Glass partitions, answered

Nothing is soundproof, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. What is achievable is a measurable rating. A single laminated light in a well-sealed frame typically lands around STC 35 to 39, which handles ordinary background noise. A double-glazed assembly with two independent lights, an air cavity and absorptive reveals typically reaches STC 45 to 50, which is where a normal meeting-room conversation stops being intelligible outside the room. The installed result depends on the head, base and jamb seals and on the door as much as it does on the glass.

Because sound does not need to go through the partition if it can go over it. A partition stopped at the suspended ceiling leaves the plenum as an open path between rooms, and the rating of the glass becomes largely irrelevant. Taking the head to the structural slab with a deflection channel and infilling the void above the ceiling closes that path. The deflection channel matters separately: the slab above moves, and the partition must not be asked to carry any of that movement.

Most projects install in one to five days on site. A single conference-room enclosure is usually one to two days; a full floor with several rooms runs three to five. Fabrication is typically two to three weeks after the final measure, and we schedule installation out of hours or at weekends where a floor is occupied.

Yes. Partition glass is toughened or laminated safety glazing. Toughened glass breaks into small blunt granules rather than shards; laminated glass holds together on its interlayer. Full-height glazing also gets a visual manifestation band at eye level so people can see the panel is there — that is a code requirement in glazed walkways and circulation, not a decorative choice.

Yes — swing, sliding and pivot doors, framed or frameless, in the same finish as the partition. Commercial hardware throughout: closers, locks, magnetic catches and ADA-compliant pulls and levers. On an acoustic front the door is normally the weakest element, so if the room has to perform we specify seals and a drop seal at the threshold rather than leaving an undercut.

Yes. Safety glazing, manifestation in circulation areas, fire separation where a rated line is crossed, ADA clearances at doors, and structural fixing to the slab and floor. Where a permit is required we prepare the submission and supply the system documentation the reviewer asks for.

Yes. Applied films, acid-etch effect films, gradient manifestation and switchable privacy film can all be fitted to installed glass. That is a genuine advantage of starting clear: you can see how the space is actually used before deciding which rooms need screening.

Demountable systems are designed for it. Panels, tracks and doors come down, get transported and go back up in the new space. Sizes rarely map one-to-one onto a different floor plate, so expect some panels to be re-cut or replaced — but the hardware, doors and the bulk of the glass move with you.
