Each of these is a different assembly with its own hardware, tolerances and code path. Drawings, not stock photos.
The most common screen material in DMV homes. Fiberglass mesh provides excellent visibility, good airflow, and does not crease or corrode. Ideal for most residential windows where pets are not a concern. We carry multiple densities including standard 18x16 mesh and fine 20x20 mesh for improved insect protection.
Half screens cover only the bottom or top portion of a double-hung window, providing insect protection where the window actually opens while maintaining an unobstructed view through the other half. Popular in DMV homes where homeowners want maximum visibility and natural light with functional bug protection where air enters.
Ribbon-flat strands woven tight enough to shade the glass from outside, before the sun has reached it. Especially valuable on west-facing and south-facing windows through a DMV summer, where an interior blind can only intercept heat that is already through the pane. Fairfax County, Montgomery County and Prince George's County all have plenty of west elevations that want it.
Heavy-duty vinyl-coated polyester mesh woven from far heavier yarn than standard fiberglass. Resists claws, scratching, and pushing from dogs and cats without tearing or distorting. The best investment any pet owner in the DMV can make for maintaining intact window screens while giving animals the benefit of fresh air and outdoor views.

We measure each opening and assess existing frames, hardware, and attachment points. For whole-house projects, we inventory every screen with individual measurements and material recommendations.
We recommend the right mesh for each window: standard fiberglass, pet-resistant, solar, or fine no-see-um mesh based on what each opening actually has to deal with.
Mesh is installed with proper tension using a spline roller. Too loose and screens sag; too tight and the frame pulls out of square.
Each screen is checked for fit, flush seating, and even tension. Hardware including pull tabs, clips, and spring plungers is tested and replaced if worn.

The DMV's four-season climate makes functional screens essential. Spring brings heavy pollen, making screens critical for allergy sufferers. Summer means mosquitoes and stink bugs through every unscreened opening. Fall offers the best natural ventilation weather — screens let you skip the AC on 70-degree days. We recommend scheduling screen inspections in early spring to catch winter damage before window-opening season.
Standard fiberglass mesh is not designed for pet claws and weight. Pet-resistant mesh uses vinyl-coated polyester on a much heavier yarn — it withstands scratching, pushing and a running dog without opening up, while keeping good airflow and visibility. Especially worth doing on first-floor windows, screen doors and screened porches, which is where the damage happens.
Most homes need full screen replacement 15 to 25 years after construction as mesh degrades from UV, frames oxidize, and hardware wears out. Doing the whole house in one visit also leaves every screen the same age and the same mesh, which replacing them one at a time never does. For new construction, we fabricate complete screen packages matched to your specific window brands and models.
An interior blind can only intercept heat that is already through the glass. A solar screen shades the pane itself, from outside, which is a fundamentally better place to stop it. The mesh is woven from ribbon-flat strands packed tight, so it works as fabric shading rather than as a filter, and the effect is most obvious on west and south-facing rooms in July and August. It also cuts glare on screens and televisions, and reduces the light reaching furniture, floors and artwork. The trade is the view: a solar mesh is denser than standard insect screening and you can tell.

The frame size measured corner to corner — screens are ordered to the frame, not to the window — and a photograph of one corner, which tells us the extrusion, the channel and the spline size. If you want a different mesh from what is in there now, tell us which openings: it is common to put pet mesh on the ground floor and standard fiberglass upstairs, and solar mesh only on the west elevation.

Two about the mesh, two about the frame that has to carry it.
Nothing in a screen is glued, stapled or clamped. A rubber cord slightly larger than the gap the mesh leaves in the channel is rolled in on top of it, and friction does the rest. Undersize cord lets the mesh creep out under wind load; oversize cord splits the channel wall on an older extrusion and then nothing will hold. Matching cord to channel and mesh is most of the job.
Standard fibreglass is the baseline. Aluminium is crisper and holds its shape but creases permanently once dented. Pet-resistant polyester puts much heavier yarn on the same pitch, so it takes claws and shoulders. Solar mesh weaves ribbon-flat strands tight enough to shade the glass. Going finer than 18 by 16 stops smaller insects and costs a little airflow and a little light.
Screens are square because of their corner keys. When a key cracks or works loose the frame racks, and after that no amount of tension makes it fit the opening. We check the diagonals before the last rail is rolled — if they do not agree, the frame is corrected or rebuilt before any mesh goes near it.
Tension is set by the roller and it only gets one attempt: too little and the mesh bags and rattles, too much and it pulls the long rails in and bows the frame out of its opening. Short rails first, then the long ones, checking the diagonals before the last corner is committed. It is the difference between a screen that drops into the window and one that has to be persuaded.
If a sash is coming out anyway, or the glass in it needs work, the screens for that elevation are worth doing in the same visit rather than as a separate trip.
