Patio door rollers carry 80 to 150 pounds through thousands of cycles per year, exposed to weather, grit, and debris. Over time, bearings wear, wheels flatten, and the door drags. Two about the glass, two about the mechanism that carries it.
One picture square-on of the closed door tells us the configuration — which panel moves, which way it moves, and whether the frame is vinyl, aluminium or clad timber. A second close-up of the meeting stile with the door open shows the interlock profile, and that is what identifies the system when there is no brand label left anywhere on it.
There is no size threshold and no height threshold on this one. Any glazing in an operable door panel is a hazardous location under IRC R308.4.1 and IBC 2406.4.1, so it is tempered or laminated, and it carries a permanent mark in the corner saying which. If your existing panel has no mark in any corner, it is worth knowing that before anything else is discussed.
Rollers carry the entire weight of the panel through thousands of cycles, in grit, in salt and in freeze-thaw. When the wheels wear flat the panel drops onto the rail, the interlock falls out of engagement and the weatherstrip stops touching — which is why a door that drags is usually also a door that draughts. Patio is a category, not a mechanism: two-panel sliders, French pairs that swing, multi-slide runs that stack, and pocket doors that vanish into the wall. They fail in different ways — a French pair drops on its hinges and binds at the astragal, a multi-slide loses alignment across several panels — but all of them are glazed, and all of them can be re-glazed in the frame you already have.
If the glass is intact and the problem is that the door drags, bumps, jumps the track or will not lock, that is a mechanism job rather than a glazing one, and it has a page of its own with the wear patterns drawn out in full.
