How to Choose the Right Shower Door Glass

All shower door glass in the DMV must be safety glazing — either tempered or laminated glass. Standard clear glass (annealed) is prohibited in shower enclosures by DC, Maryland, and Virginia building codes. This is a non-negotiable requirement.

Tempered glass is the standard choice. It is four to five times stronger than annealed glass and when it breaks, it shatters into small, relatively blunt pebbles rather than sharp shards. All Virginia Glass Windows shower door installations use tempered safety glass.

Laminated glass (two panes bonded with a PVB or EVA interlayer) is an alternative that holds together when broken, providing additional security and sound reduction. It is used in premium shower enclosures and where post-breakage containment is critical.

3/8-inch (10mm) tempered glass is the standard for framed and semi-frameless shower doors. It is lightweight enough for standard hinge hardware while providing good rigidity and impact resistance.

1/2-inch (12mm) tempered glass is used in frameless shower doors and provides a more substantial, luxurious feel. It requires heavier-duty hinges and hardware and is the choice for premium bathroom renovations throughout Bethesda, McLean, and other high-end DMV neighborhoods.

5/16-inch glass is occasionally used in budget frameless applications but is less common. It does not have the premium appearance of 1/2-inch glass.

Clear glass is the most popular choice for modern frameless shower enclosures. It makes bathrooms appear larger and allows the tile work to remain visible. Clear glass requires regular cleaning to prevent hard water buildup.

Frosted or acid-etched glass provides privacy while maintaining light transmission. It is a popular choice for shared bathrooms and master baths where privacy is desired. Note that etched surfaces can be harder to clean than polished clear glass.

Rain, bamboo, and other patterned glass options provide partial privacy with decorative texture. These are available in both smooth-face (easier to clean) and textured-face (maximum pattern visibility) options.

Low-iron "ultra-clear" glass eliminates the green tint present in standard tempered glass. It has noticeably better clarity and is recommended for premium renovations where color accuracy in the tile and fixtures is important.

Hydrophobic coatings (factory-applied or aftermarket) cause water to bead and run off the glass, dramatically reducing hard water stain formation. Premium shower door manufacturers such as Kohler and DreamLine offer this treatment. Aftermarket products provide similar benefits.

Anti-microbial coatings are available on some specialty glass products. While the benefit is real, regular cleaning with proper products is more important than any coating for maintaining hygiene.
