0.69 in at the top against a 3.00 in limit (height over 12, capped at 3 in). Bending stress 3,730 psi, 39 per cent of the 9,600 psi allowable for fully tempered glass. It passes, but past about 0.6 in the run feels alive under a hand and owners notice. Thickness is the fix people wish they had bought.

The glass is rarely the problem

Glass railings fail in three places, and the panel is almost never one of them. They fail at the connection, where a 200 lb push at the top of a 42 inch post becomes 700 ft-lb at the base and has to find blocked framing that somebody may or may not have installed. They fail at the code review, where a monolithic tempered run over a patio meets IBC 2407.1 and loses. And they fail at the handover, where a run that passed every calculation still moves half an inch under a hand and the owner decides it feels cheap.

So this tool draws the run to scale and then tells you what the run weighs, what its base connection has to develop, how far the top moves under the code load, and which sections of the code it satisfies. The model rotates because the sightline matters. The numbers are underneath because they are what decides whether it gets built.

Post system or frameless

In a post system the glass is infill. Posts at 48 inches on centre take the load into the structure, the panels sit in clamps, and a broken panel is a replacement rather than an emergency. It is cheaper, it is more forgiving of a rough substrate, and there is metal in the view every four feet.

In a frameless system the glass is the structure. A base shoe grips the bottom two and a half inches and the panel cantilevers the rest, which is why thickness, height and deflection all become one question. Nothing interrupts the view, and nothing is forgiving. The shoe has to be shimmed dead level and dead straight over the whole run, because a frameless run shows every thousandth of an inch of error along its top edge.

Why there is no price on this page

Because it would be wrong more often than right. The same 24 foot run costs one thing on a new deck where the rim is exposed and blocking goes in before the decking, and something else entirely on a fifteen year old deck where the boards have to come up, the rim turns out to be a single 2x8, and the whole run needs a doubled rim before a single panel arrives. We would rather hand you an exact specification and quote it honestly than publish a number we have to walk back on site.

Four things worth knowing before you buy

  • Laminated is not an upgrade, it is often the code. Walking surface below, no top rail, and monolithic tempered stops being legal. Find out at design, not at inspection.
  • Deflection scales with the cube of the height. Going from 36 to 42 inches at the same thickness adds nearly 60 per cent more movement at the top. It is the number owners feel.
  • Level matters more than plumb. A base shoe reads its own error back to you along twenty feet of glass top edge. Shimming the shoe is most of the labour on a frameless run.
  • Glass cannot be cut after tempering. Every hole, notch and rake angle is decided before the panel goes into the furnace, which is why we template rather than trust a drawing.

Questions people ask

Because of what each one does when it breaks. Fully tempered glass dices into thousands of small pieces and the entire panel leaves the opening in an instant. Laminated glass is two tempered lites bonded to an interlayer, so a broken panel cracks but stays standing in the shoe. IBC 2407.1 requires laminated glass in guards, with one exception: monolithic fully tempered is permitted where there is no walking surface beneath the guard, or where that surface is permanently protected from falling glass. Put a patio, a walkway or a lower deck under a frameless run with no top rail and the exception evaporates. This tool flags that combination as a failure because it is the single most common way a beautiful railing turns out to be illegal.
