Guards must resist 50 lb per linear foot along the top and a 200 lb concentrated load in any direction. Panel width and post spacing are engineered to that, which is why panels are limited to 48 inches on this system.

The rule that catches almost every frameless deck railing

People choose glass railing for the view, which means they want the least metal possible, which means no top rail. That combination is exactly what IBC 2407.1.2 restricts. Where a glass panel acts as the structural baluster and there is a walking surface below, the glass must be laminated so that a broken panel stays in the opening instead of leaving it. A single fully tempered lite disintegrates completely when it fails, and it is only permitted with a continuous top rail or where nothing is underneath.

Laminated tempered glass is a heavier, slower product than a single tempered lite — thicker panels, longer fabrication, and a different handling plan on install day. That is the honest cost of the frameless look on an elevated deck, and it is worth knowing before you fall in love with a rendering.

What holds the railing up matters more than the glass

A guard has to resist 50 pounds per linear foot along the top and a 200 pound point load anywhere. Those forces land in the anchors and then in whatever is behind them. A base shoe bolted through a cantilevered deck board will not hold, no matter how good the glass is. On wood decks we look for rim joist blocking, and on concrete we core and epoxy. That assessment is the part of the job that actually determines whether the railing is safe.

Questions people ask

It depends on whether there is a top rail and whether anyone can walk underneath. IBC 2407.1.2 requires laminated glass for structural baluster panels where a walking surface sits below. A single fully tempered lite is only permitted where there is a continuous top rail that stays in place if a panel fails, or where nothing is below. This is the most common reason a beautiful frameless deck railing fails inspection.
