Why Spring Is the Best Time for Window Inspection

Your Spring Window Checklist

1. Visual Inspection from Outside

Walk around your home and examine each window from the exterior. Look for visible cracks, chips, foggy areas between double-pane glass, deteriorated glazing compound, and gaps between the glass and frame. Note which windows face south and west — these take the most sun damage and are the first to show stress cracks.

2. Interior Inspection

From inside, check each window for condensation between panes (seal failure), drafts around the perimeter, difficulty opening or closing, and any fogging that appears on cold mornings. Run your hand around the edge of each closed window on a breezy day to feel for air infiltration.

3. Glazing Compound Check

For older homes with wood-frame windows, inspect the glazing compound — the putty that holds the glass in the frame. Cracked, missing, or crumbling compound allows air and water infiltration. Re-glazing is a straightforward repair that extends the life of your existing glass and frames significantly.

4. Screen Inspection

While checking windows, examine your screens for tears, holes, bent frames, and missing hardware. Damaged screens let insects and pollen into your home and reduce your ability to enjoy natural ventilation during the DMV's pleasant spring and fall weather.

5. Schedule Repairs Before Summer
