The DMV Noise Map: Knowing Your Enemy

Before talking about solutions, it helps to be specific about what kind of noise we are dealing with, because different frequencies require different glass solutions. The DMV has a few distinct noise profiles that come up again and again in my work.

Metro noise — especially the heavy Orange, Blue, and Silver line trains that run elevated above Wilson Boulevard in Arlington and at grade through Crystal City — is dominated by low-frequency vibration and wheel squeal in the mid frequencies. If you live in one of the high-rises along the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor within a quarter mile of the track, you know this rhythm intimately: that building-vibration rumble followed by metallic squeal that peaks twice per minute during rush hour and tapers to once every ten minutes after 9pm. Standard double-pane glass handles the mid-frequency squeal adequately but lets the low-frequency rumble pass through almost unattenuated.

Aircraft noise from Reagan National is a different animal — primarily mid and high-frequency jet engine noise with a distinctive Doppler pattern as the aircraft track the river corridor. Residents of Navy Yard, Buzzard Point, and the Del Ray and Potomac Yard areas of Alexandria are directly under approach paths. BWI affects a different set of neighborhoods, primarily in Anne Arundel County and southern Prince George's County. Highway noise from I-495, I-66, and Route 50 is broadband — engines, tire noise, and wind noise across a wide frequency range — and is often the most persistent because highways never really go quiet.

Understanding which noise type is your primary problem helps determine the right glass solution. Low-frequency noise (Metro, heavy truck traffic) benefits most from mass and airspace — thicker, heavier glass and wider gaps between panes. Mid and high-frequency noise (aircraft, tire squeal) benefits from acoustic dampening materials — PVB interlayers and laminated glass construction. Broadband highway noise benefits from the combination: thick laminated panes with a wide airspace.

STC Ratings: What the Numbers Actually Mean

STC (Sound Transmission Class) is the standard rating for how well a building element reduces sound. The higher the number, the better the sound reduction. For context: a standard interior partition wall with no insulation is around STC 33. A well-insulated interior wall is STC 45 to 50. Human speech becomes barely audible through a barrier at STC 45 and inaudible at STC 50+. Windows are almost always the weakest acoustic element in a wall assembly, which is why improving the glass is so impactful even when the wall itself is well-insulated.

Standard single-pane glass: STC 26 to 28. You can hear most conversations clearly through it. Standard double-pane with 1/2 inch airspace: STC 28 to 32. Modest improvement, and actually worse than expected at some frequencies due to glass resonance. Standard double-pane with 1 inch airspace: STC 33 to 37. A noticeable improvement in everyday noise. Acoustic laminated double-pane (one laminated pane, 1 inch airspace): STC 38 to 43. This is where speech becomes difficult to understand through the glass and Metro/highway noise becomes noticeably muffled rather than clear. Acoustic double-pane with both panes laminated and unequal thicknesses: STC 44 to 50+. This is where we get into meaningful sound isolation.

The key specification detail that most glass shops overlook is using unequal pane thicknesses in a double-pane acoustic unit. When both panes are the same thickness (3mm/3mm or 4mm/4mm), they resonate at the same frequency and effectively cancel each other's acoustic benefit at that frequency — a phenomenon called coincidence dip. By using different thicknesses (3mm and 5mm, or 4mm and 6mm), the resonant frequencies are offset and there is no coincidence dip, resulting in more uniform performance across the frequency range. This is a detail that matters a lot for Metro noise specifically, where the wheel squeal frequency is in a predictable range.

Window Inserts: The Apartment Dweller's Best Option

Here is the challenge that applies to almost every apartment in the DMV: the windows are not yours to replace. Whether you are renting or own a condo in a building with common elements, the window frames and potentially the glass are the building's responsibility, and replacing them requires either landlord cooperation or HOA/board approval that can take months to years to obtain even when the outcome is favorable.

Window inserts — also called interior storm windows or acoustic window inserts — are the solution to this constraint, and they work remarkably well. An insert is essentially a second window installed inside your existing window, in the interior window reveal. It has its own frame, its own glass (typically 1/4 inch laminated glass), and its own perimeter seal. It creates an additional air layer between the existing window and the new insert, with a gap that can be 2 to 4 inches depending on the depth of the window reveal — much wider than the 1/2 to 1 inch gap in a standard double-pane unit. This wide air layer is extremely effective at low-frequency sound reduction.

A well-fitted insert on a single-pane window brings the combined STC up to 38 to 48 — a dramatic improvement, typically reducing perceived noise level by 50 to 70 percent. Full Glass Replacement: When You Own the Unit

For condo owners who own their window glass (as opposed to buildings where windows are common elements), and for homeowners near the noise sources described above, full acoustic glass replacement is the superior long-term solution. It is permanent, invisible, and delivers the best possible acoustic performance within the existing frame.

The typical specification for a serious noise problem in the DMV — I-66 frontage, Reagan National approach path, close to a Metro station — is a double-pane unit with 6mm laminated acoustic glass on the exterior, 1-inch argon-filled airspace, and 4mm laminated acoustic glass on the interior. This achieves STC 45 to 50 depending on the specific PVB interlayer used. At STC 47, Metro trains are reduced from a loud, clear intrusion to a soft background rumble. Aircraft flyovers are present but not startling. I-66 becomes white noise rather than an identifiable traffic stream.

The energy benefits come bundled with the acoustic upgrade when you specify a Low-E coating on the acoustic glass unit — you get noise reduction, UV protection, and improved thermal insulation from the same glass replacement.
